Empowered to Thrive: Tihun’s Voice of Hope

My name is Tihun Albachew. I’m 40 years old, and for many years, I’ve worked as a casual laborer to support my family. My husband is visually impaired, and we have a teenage son who goes to school. Life hasn’t been easy, but I’ve always done my best to keep us going.

One day, I heard about a vocational skills training program that was recruiting participants. I didn’t hesitate—I enrolled immediately. The training lasted six months, and I learned so much during that time. It gave me hope that I could finally build something stable for myself and my family.

After completing the training, I was offered a job at Salu Self Help Blind and Handicapped Association as a cotton mat producer. That day changed my life. Now I have steady employment and dignified work—something I’m truly proud of.

What makes me even happier is working alongside people with disabilities. Because of my husband’s blindness, I’ve seen how society can treat disabled people unfairly. I understand the stigma, and I’ve always wanted to stand with them rather than see them isolated. Being part of this team gives me a deep sense of purpose.

I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity. It’s more than just a job—it’s a new beginning.
